In which Matthew Paul reviews 'The Ayrshire Nestling' by Gerry Cambridge (Tringa Press, 2024) and we have a poem from one of Gerry Cambridge's previous collections.
Credit due to Matthew Paul for commenting on the violation of a nest, a 'mother's' loss, re the female birds, and maybe, the male propensity to take lives? I grew up with birdnesting boys around me but none of us girls were ever interested. One could blame the Observer's Guide, as in the bucket list of today, ticking 'em off perhaps. A bit like trainspotting, hands up girl trainspotters.
Great review— and absolutely true to the impact of reading this remarkable book. It does indeed feel like a classic: so engaging and intense, across a range of scenes and moods.
Cracking review of the Ayrshire Nestling. I’m tempted to shell out the eighteen quid for it.
